Hedwig Fassbender
Hedwig Fassbender is back to sing at Oper Frankfurt, where roles have included Mrs Grose (The Turn of the Screw), Brigitta (Die tote Stadt/The City of the Dead) and, last season, roles in the world premiere of Peter Eötvös’ Der goldene Drache/The Golden Dragon. Recent roles sung by this internationally sought after mezzo-soprano have included Herodias (Salome) in Geneva, Brussels and Bordeaux and Mère Marie (The Dialogue of the Carmelites) in Nantes / Angers. In November 2014 she sings Mrs Grose in a new production of The Turn of the Screw at Zurich Opera, conducted by Constantin Trinks and directed by Willy Decker and, in 2015, Kostelnicka in Jenufa at the Staatstheater in Hannover, a role she has sung in Monte Carlo and Berlin. Conductors with whom she has worked have included Riccardo Chailly, Michail Jurowski, Kirill Petrenko, Adam Fischer, Vladimir Jurowski, Iván Fischer, Kazushi Ono, Asher Fisch and Sebastian Weigle. She was nominated for »Singer of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine for her Sieglinde in Liège in 2003 and 2005. She can be heard on a 2005/Naxos recording of Tristan und Isolde, conducted by Leif Segerstam. Hedwig Fassbender has taught singing at the HfMDK in Frankfurt since 1999. Her pupils have included Katharina Magiera, Björn Bürger, Kateryna Kasper, Stine Fischer, Jana Baumeister, Ruzan Mantashyan, Esther Dierkes and Keith Stonum. She learned the piano before taking up singing in Munich and was under contract in Freiburg and Basel before going freelance in 1987.
