Hedwig Fassbender is back at Oper Frankfurt, where roles in past seasons have included Mrs. Grose (The Turn of the Screw) and Brigitta (Die tote Stadt/The Dead City). She returns next season as Gertrud (the mother) in a new production of Hänsel und Gretel. This internationally sought after mezzo-soprano's recent engagements have included Herodias (Salome) in Geneva, Brussels and Bordeaux and Mère Marie (Dialogue of the Carmelites) in Nantes / Angers. In 2015 she will sing the Küsterin in Jenůfa at the Staatstheater in Hannover, a role she has already performed in Monte Carlo and Berlin. Conductors with whom she has worked have included Riccardo Chailly, Michail Jurowski, Kirill Petrenko, Adam Fischer, Vladimir Jurowski, Iván Fischer, Kazushi Ono, Asher Fisch and Sebastian Weigle. She was nominated as »Singer of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine for her portrayal of Sieglinde in Walküre in Liège in 2003 and 2005. She sang Isolde on a recording of Tristan und Isolde (Naxos, 2005) conducted by Leif Segerstam. Hedwig Fassbender has worked as a professor at the HfMDK in Frankfurt since 1999. Her pupils have included Björn Bürger, Katharina Magiera, Kateryna Kasper, Stine Fischer, Jana Baumeister, Ruzan Mantashyan, Esther Dierkes and Keith Stonum. Hedwig Fassbender studied piano before taking up singing at the Musikhochschule in Munich. She was under contract in Freiburg and Basel before becoming going freelance in 1987.
