Multimedia Oratorio in three parts (1990-1993)

First performance in Germany December 16th 2016
Performed in English with German surtitles
Introductory talk, in German, begins half an hour before the performances

The Cave of the Patriarchs, also called the Machpela Cave, in Hebron is the Sanctuary of Abraham and his descendants. The place has enormous religious importance for Jews and Muslims. The documentary-like video opera The Cave by Steve Reich and video artist Beryl Korot investigates the meaning the 4000 year old story of Abraham, his wives Sarah and Hagar and sons Ismael and Isaac has for Jews and Muslims today. The same five questions are posed in recorded interviews: »Who was Abraham? Who was Sarah? Hagar? Ismael? and Isaac?«

The Cave, one of Steve Reich's most important works, is being performed for the first time in the Frankfurt Rhein-Main region – as part of celebrations for his 80th birthday.

This is one of the works in the HEIM.SPIELE series (you can find a trailer here), a joint project brought into being by the Ensemble Modern and Oper Frankfurt. With generous support from the Kulturfond Frankfurt RheinMain, the Aventis Foundation, Deutsche Bank Stiftung, Crespo Foundation, Dr. Marschner Stiftung, the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main, the Friends of the Ensemble Modern e.V. and the city of Frankfurt.
