Simon Bailey, a former member of the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt, returned to the company this season for Ferrando (Il trovatore), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), jumped in at very short notice to sing the title role in a performance of Trojahn's Enrico and now sings Mr Redburn again, in this last revival of Billy Budd. The many roles with which he thrilled audiences in Frankfurt over the years included Leporello (Don Giovanni), Adam Ochsenschwanz (Křenek's Schwergewicht / Heavyweight), Peter (the Father, Hänsel und Gretel), Achilla (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Mozart's Figaro, Gunther (Götterdämmerung), Klingsor (Parsifal), Gelone (L’Orontea, available on CD – OehmsClassics), Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola) and the title roles in Herzog Blaubarts Burg / Bluebeard's Castle and Don Giovanni. Recent engagements have included Šiškov in From the House of the Dead and Schaklowity in Khovanshchina at Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Jochanaan (role debut) in Salome and Kaspar in Der Freischütz at Stuttgart Opera and Mizoguchi in Mayuzumi's Kinkakuji at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strassburg. Simon Bailey, who is also much sought-after for concert work, also enjoyed great success singing roles including Méphistophélès (La damnation de Faust), Siroco (L’Étoile), Nicanor / Satan (David's Herculanum), Figaro, Leporello and the Four Villains in Hoffmanns Erzählungen / The Tales of Hoffmann at theatres including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, La Scala Milan, the Theater an der Wien, Oper Vlaanderen, Theater Basel and the Glyndebourne and Wexford festivals. 5/2018
