Hartmut Keil was made 1st Kapellmeister of Theater Bremen in 2017/18, after enjoying great success with a new Il tabarro / Gianni Schicchi double bill. This was followed by performances of Rusalka, The Rake’s Progress and Die Entführung aus dem Serail and he can soon be heard conducting Berg's Lulu there. Other future plans include Ariadne auf Naxos at the Staatstheater in Darmstadt. Hartmut Keil worked at Oper Frankfurt from 2002 - 2016, as a coach and, from 2008, Kapellmeister and head of coaching, building up a large and varied repertoire including La traviata, Lohengrin, Tosca, Hänsel und Gretel, all of Mozart's larger operas and the world premiere of Arnulf Herrmann's Wasser / Water. Now he is back in Frankfurt, where he recently conducted the first performances in Germany of Scartazzini's Der Sandmann / The Sandman, for the first revival of this production of Die lustige Witwe / The Merry Widow. Other recent engagements have included work at Theater Basel (including La forza del destino, Daphne, Elektra and Khowanshchina, the Bregenz Festival (Die Zauberflöte and Mozart's Da Ponte operas), Theater St. Gallen and Halle Opera. He enjoys a close relationship with the Ensemble Modern, with whom he performed Eötvös’ Der goldene Drache / The Golden Dragon in Frankfurt and Bregenz. He worked at the Bayreuth Festival from 2002 – 2012 as assistant, head of coaching and conducting several production of operas in their »Wagner for Children« project. A recording of Lebt kein Gott, arias sung by the tenor Norbert Ernst with the Brandenburg Staatsorchester Frankfurt (Oder), was released by Decca.
