Toby Spence is appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time, singing Antatol (role debut) in Samuel Barber's Vanessa. This British tenor's roles at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London have included Ferdinand (The Tempest), David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress). Other recent engagements have included appearances at English National Opera, where he returns in 2018 as MK Gandhi in Glass’ Satyagraha, the Hamburg, Munich and Vienna state operas, in Paris, Brussels, the Glyndebourne, Edinburgh and Santa Fe festivals, San Francisco Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. This season he sings Captain Vere in Billy Budd, a role he sang recently at the Teatro Real in Madrid, at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. Orchestras with whom he has appeared during his busy concert career have included the Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnányi, the Berlin and Vienna philharmonic orchestras under Sir Simon Rattle, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano, the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, Roger Norrington and Charles Mackerras.
