The Turkish tenor Murat Karahan is singing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time. Recent engagements have included Alfredo (La traviata) and Don José (Carmen) at the Bolschoi in Moscow and Ismaele (Nabucco) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and the Vienna State Opera, where he will soon be singing Pinkerton (role debut) in Madama Butterfly. Other future engagements include Turiddú in Cavalleria rusticana in Palermo, Alfredo in Genua, Calaf in Turandot in Salerno and Vassili in concert performances of Umberto Giordano's Siberia at the Festival de Radio France in Montpellier. Manrico is a role he has sung, jumping in at the last moment, in this David Bösch production at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Arena di Verona and Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he returns in 2018. Murat Karahan has appeared regularly at the National Opera in Riga since 2012. After studying at Bilkent University, and obtaining his degree in musicology, he joined the ensemble at the Staatsoper in Ankara, where he sang many roles. He took part in masterclasses held by Renata Scotto, Anna Vandi and Cesare Scarton at the Academia di Santa Cecilia.
