Mark Shanahan is back in Frankfurt, where he has conducted Tosca, Death in Venice, Simon Boccanegra, Nabucco and Adriana Lecouvreur, to open the new season with the first revival of the stunning new production of Carmen. He was born in Ireland and studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music in London. His career took off after he won 1st prize at the NAYO conductors competition. He works regularly with many leading European orchestras and opera companies. He is First Guest Conductor of the Nederlands Symfonieorkest and Artistic Director of the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent projects at the Nantes-Angers Opera, where the production of Jenůfa won the 2007 Claude Rostand Critique Award, were Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte and Les Pêcheurs des perles. Other recent engagements have included productions in Marseille and Lille, at English National Opera in London, Opera North in Leeds, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and the National Reisopera in Enschede.
