The Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias is back to repeat his powerful portrayal of Scarpia at Oper Frankfurt, where he recently sang Jago (Otello) and Stankar (Stiffelio). Recent engagements have included his debut at the Hamburg State Opera, as Macbeth, a return to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich for Nabucco and Giorgio Germont in La traviata in Glyndebourne. He returns to sing Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, where he has thrilled audiences singing Rigoletto, Tonio (Pagliacci) and Nabucco. Non Italian repertoire engagements have included Friedrich von Telramund (Lohengrin) in Athens. He has also appeared at many other leading opera houses, including those in Cologne, Stuttgart, Florence, Palermo, Venice and Valencia, the Barbican Centre in London and Salzburg Easter Festival, working with Maurizio Benini, Bertrand de Billy, Giuliano Carella, John Eliot Gardiner, Leo Hussain, Axel Kober; Nicola Luisotti, Carlo Montanaro, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Antonio Pappano, Christian Thielemann and others. Dimitri Platanias studied singing, guitar and English literature and was the recipient of an Alexandra Triandi Scholarship to study with the mezzo-soprano Masako Tanaka Protti in Italy.
