Thomas Piffka, the Vater / Father in the world premiere of this work and first run of this production of Scartazzini's Der Sandmann at Theater Basel, is appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time. He is a regular guest at Cologne Opera, the Staatstheater in Wiesbaden and Lyon Opera and other engagements in recent seasons have included appearances at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Volksoper in Vienna, in Graz, Malmö, Göteborg, Dijon, Weimar and Kassel. During the long time he spent under contract to the Aalto Theater in Essen his roles included Offenbach's Hoffmann, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Don José (Carmen), Florestan (Fidelio) and Max (Der Freischütz). He recently sang Walther von Stoltzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Theater Chemnitz, the Captain (Wozzeck) in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Graf Elemer (Arabella) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Erik (Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman), Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Staatsoper in Budapest and the Kaiser (Frau ohne Schatten) in Wiesbaden. He is much sought after for the role of Alwa in Berg's Lulu, which he sang for the first time in Lyon and then at La Scala Milan, the Festwochen in Vienna, under Marc Albrecht at the Salzburg Festival (available on DVD) and Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper in Berlin and will be singing again, at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. Thomas Piffka is also a professor at the University for Music and Dance in Cologne / Aachen.
