The Australian Benedict Andrews, who lives in Iceland, is one of the world's leading directors of plays and operas. His Shakespeare cycle - The War of the Roses (2009), Great and Small (2011) and The Maids (2013) at the Sydney Theatre Company, all with Cate Blanchett in the cast, toured to many international festivals, including ones in Vienna, Paris, London and New York. He directed Three Sisters and A Streetcar Named Desire in London, King Lear in Reykjavik and has worked regularly at the Schaubühne Berlin since 2004, where works have included Kane's Gesäubert and Harrower's Blackbird. He directed his first opera in 2011: Monteverdi's Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria at the Young Vic London. This was followed by Le nozze di Figaro at Opera Australia, Glanert's Caligula at English National Opera in London, Macbeth in Copenhagen, La Bohème in Amsterdam and Prokofiev's Der feurige Engel/The Fiery Angel at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he will stage Reimann's Medea in 2017. His first film for the cinema, Una, was released in 2016. Benedict Andrews has won many accolades, including the London Critics Circle Award, the Icelandic Gríman Award and the Sydney Theatre Award.
