The American conductor John Nelson, appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time, enjoys an international reputation for, amongst others, his interpretation of works by Berlioz. He has enjoyed great success with Les Troyens at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and the Staatstheater in Stuttgart and a recording of the work with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg is being made with Warner Classics. Engagements next season include Berlioz’ La Damnation de Faust in Bucharest. He has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras and opera companies, including the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. This season he returns to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, whose Music Director he used to be, the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Czech Philarmonic. His discography includes Béatrice et Bénédict (1992 Diapason d’Or), Handel's Semele (1993 Grammy Award) and highly praised DVDs of works by Bach, Haydn and Beethoven. John Nelson is Honorary Music Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris (with whom he has recorded all Beethoven piano concertos and symphonies) and Artistic Director of SOLI DEO GLORIA, a foundation dedicated to sacred music.
