Lothar Zagrosek appeared at Oper Frankfurt for the first time in 1954, singing 1st Boy in Die Zauberflöte under Georg Solti. He studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky, Istvàn Kertész, Bruno Maderna and Herbert von Karajan. After holding the posts of General Music Director in Solingen and Krefeld-Mönchengladbach he was Chief Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Grand Opéra in Paris, Chief Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and General Music Diretor of Oper Leipzig. He was in charge of the musical side of things of the Staatsoper in Stuttgart from 1997 – 2006 before working as Chief Conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin until 2011. A sought-after operatic conductor he has worked at many leading theatres including the Vienna, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin state operas, the Semperoper in Dresden, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. Now he is back in Frankfurt, where he has conducted a Il prigioniero / Volo di notte double bill, Elektra, Pique Dame, Katja Kabanová and this triple bill, which he led when it first opened in 2017. He is also much in demand for concert work. Many of the recordings in his impressive discography have won prizes; his recordings for DECCA's »Entartete Musik« edition are important reference works. He was awarded Hessen's Culture Prize, the German Critics' Prize and voted »Conductor of the Year« three times by Opernwelt magazine.
